BS 6651 was a British standard for the protection of structures against lightning. It was published in 1999 and withdrawn in 2008, when it was replaced by the international standard IEC/BS EN 62305. BS 6651 provided guidance on the principles and practice of lightning protection, based on the characteristics of lightning phenomenon and the evidence from experience. It covered the design, installation and maintenance of lightning protection systems (LPS) for various types of structures and services.

BS 6651 was divided into four sections: general requirements, protection of structures, protection of services and protection of electronic equipment. It also included several annexes with additional information and examples. The main features of BS 6651 were:

  • It defined two levels of LPS: ordinary and high-risk, based on the probability of lightning strike and the consequences of damage.

  • It recommended a mesh arrangement as the commonly used method of air termination network, with two sizes of mesh (20 m x 10 m and 10 m x 5 m) depending on the level of LPS.

  • It specified two levels of down conductor spacing: 20 m and 10 m, depending on the level of LPS.

  • It required an overall earthing resistance of 10 Ω or less, achieved by using at least 10 times the number of down conductors as earth electrodes.

  • It required bonding of all metallic services (gas, water, electricity, etc.) to the main earth terminal along with the external down conductor.

  • It provided general advice for the protection of electronic equipment, with a separate risk assessment and specific measures such as surge protective devices (SPDs).

BS 6651 was widely used in the UK and other countries for many years, until it was superseded by the more comprehensive and complex IEC/BS EN 62305 standard. The new standard reflects the increased scientific understanding of lightning and its effects, as well as the growing impact of technology and electronic systems on our daily activities. It consists of four parts, covering general principles, risk management, physical damage to structures and life hazard, and electrical and electronic systems within structures.
